Enhancing Carbon and Energy Management Training: A Success Story with Carbon Energy Professionals

As the need for expertise in climate change and energy management grows, Carbon Energy Professionals (CEP), a leader in carbon and energy management training, recognised the need to expand their certification offerings to meet the rising demand for education in this space, along with flexible, digital learning solutions.

Due to our extensive experience developing and delivering training across a range of topics in climate change adaptation and mitigation, greenhouse gas estimation and accounting, and regulatory and voluntary carbon markets, CEP partnered with EAS to develop a series of training and assessment modules aimed at setting a new standard in professional certification.

The Challenge

CEP’s challenge was to create a comprehensive suite of training modules designed as the foundation for their new professional-level certifications in carbon and energy management. Their goal was to enhance their training portfolio by offering self-paced, online modules. This shift to digital delivery was intended to improve the scope, accessibility, and flexibility of CEP’s training programmes, aligning with the demand for online and adaptable learning solutions.

Our Approach

To meet CEP’s requirements, we undertook a detailed development process to create three training modules, each lasting between 4 to 8 hours, covering the following essential topics:

  1. Carbon Markets & Offsetting: This module provides an overview of regulatory and voluntary carbon markets, and explores the advantages and limitations of these market mechanisms in achieving emission reductions, both in New Zealand and globally. There is a particular focus on how high integrity carbon offsets can be generated in the voluntary carbon market for use in voluntary claims such as carbon neutral.

  2. Regulatory Environment: This module delves into the legislation, policies, and agencies governing climate change regulation in New Zealand. It includes a comparative analysis with other countries, explores the Emissions Trading Scheme, Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), along with the impact of international climate agreements on New Zealand.

  3. Climate Change Risk: This module focuses on managing climate change risks within the framework of the National Climate Change Risk Assessment and the National Adaptation Plan. It addresses specific risks faced by New Zealand and discusses strategies for risk mitigation within the business context up and down New Zealand.

The training materials feature narrated slideshows and embedded videos to create an engaging learning experience. Each module includes interactive elements such as quizzes and activities, concluding with an examination and a digital badge for successful completion.

The Impact

Our collaboration with CEP has resulted in the successful delivery of these training modules, equipping learners with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills. The self-paced, online format ensures that businesses can access high-quality training for their staff at their convenience.

The interactive elements and digital badges not only enhance learner engagement but also provide meaningful validation of their achievements, delivering professional certification in carbon and energy management that meets today’s knowledge expectations in this field.

CEP’s dedication to advancing carbon and energy management training through innovative digital solutions has set a new benchmark in the industry. Our partnership in developing these training modules highlights the importance of high-quality education, adapting to market demands, and leveraging technology to enhance educational accessibility and effectiveness.
